in oakland, i'm da lin, cbs 5. >> thank you. >>> an 11-year-old daly city boy is dead after a police chase in pasadena. joe vazquez on the accident and neighbors who are devastated by the news. joe. >> reporter: the victim, allen, is 11-year-old kendrick ing here with his family on 89th street in daly city. they are presumed still to be in southern california dealing with the aftermath of this horrible crash. the family was in southern california in pasadena on christmas day visiting relatives. as they were riding in a minivan police were chasing a suspect in an suv through the streets. the chase went a mile and less than a minute then the suspect vehicle failed to stop for a red light and smashed into the minivan. two cousins were killed including an 11-year-old in daly city. three others were badly hurt. [ crying ] >> the dad and the boy always traveled together and see them together all the time. the father was always the one taking them to school... >>> you're watching cbs 5 eyewitness news in high definition. >>> a dangerous game of cops and cobbers in the east bay. burglars find themselves face- to-face with a homeowner who wears a badge. good evening. i'm elizabeth cook. >> and i'm allen martin. new at 11, an antioch police officer arrives home to find he's become the victim of a crime. three burglars caught in the act of stealing his guns. cbs 5 reporter christin ayers on what happened next. >> reporter: antioch police say burglaries in this area have become so widespread and so brazen that even cops have become targets. >> folks are the victims of burglars. >> reporter: most recently last night. three burglars were ransacking a police officer's home, when the officer came home. >> interrupted the burglary and three subjects fled out the back of the home. >> reporter: making off with two of the officer's guns. the offer chased them but was forced to stop when one of the suspects pulled aut the officer's stolen gun and fired a warning shot. this is not the first time this has happened. police say it does not appear

lawmakers find some common ground. cbs reporter danielle nottingham on what both sides are saying about the looming deadline. >> reporter: congressional leaders met with president obama at the white house, trying to avoid the automatic tax hikes and spending cuts set to kick in january 1. the president reminded lawmakers there's not much time left. >> we're now at the point where, in just four days, every american's tax rates are scheduled to go up by law. >> reporter: senators harry reid and mitch mcconnell returned to the senate floor, pledging to work through the weekend. >> we are engaged in discussions, the majority leader and myself and the white house, in hopes that we can come forward as early as sunday and have a recommendation. >> we're gonna do the best we can for the caucuses we have and the country that's waiting for us to make a decision. >> reporter: democratic and republican leaders have agreed to extend jobless benefits and some tax increases. but the income threshold is not yet clear. the president and senate leaders are expressing optimism that they'll get the job do
was up 22% from a year ago and in california, you may be surprised at who is buying. cbs news reporter ben tracy has more. >> this is the busy time of year. >> absolutely. this is when all the games come in. >> reporter: scott meadows runs salinas vineyards in california's napa valley and there's a good reason he put that american bald eagle on the bottle. seems kind of nationalistic. >> that was a specific from our chinese owners. china overall is looking to bring parts of america to china. >> reporter: in 2010, this vineyard was up for sale. chinese investors bought it and now 90% of the wine from here that's 9,000 cases -- is shipped to china. what does a chinese company want with a vineyard in napa valley? >> there's a big demand in china for luxury goods for goods that are scarce and for goods that are well made. so rather than buying chinese- made products and spending our money over there, they're buying american made products and sending their money back over here. >> reporter: on the jobs stay here? >> and the jobs stay here. >> reporter: rich chinese firms have investigated
with tornadoes and snow flurries. cbs reporter danielle nottingham tells us six deaths are blamed on this powerful system. >> reporter: the clean-up is beginning in the gulf states after a series of tornadoes hit on christmas day. >> whoa! it's right here, it's right here! >> reporter: in mobile, alabama, twisters ripped roofs off homes and toppled trees in texas. in all, more than 100,000 are without power across most of the south. >> i was screaming and hollering, i mean, i was just scared to death. >> reporter: the national weather service recorded at least 34 tornadoes from texas to alabama. the same storm system is bringing snow to the midwest from oklahoma to pennsylvania. blizzard warnings are out from arkansas to maine. in indianapolis, white-out conditions are making driving treacherous. some areas saw more than a foot of the white stuff. the storm caused the cancellation of more than 500 flights on christmas. hundreds more are expected today. for victor cav layer row his flight back home to los angeles will have to wait. >> it got canceled so we got stuck for the day and
institute --www.ncicap.org-- ,,,,,,,,,,,,,, >>> you're watching cbs 5 eyewitness news in high definition. >>> a search under the golden gate bridge turns up two bodies and a terrible tragedy. good evening. i'm allen martin. >> and i'm elizabeth cook. tonight, we're learning a man and boy have died after being pulled from the frigid bay waters. the coast guard started searching in the marin headlands late this afternoon. >> reporter: very sad story. after the two were pulled from the water, they were brought here to fort baker, but it was too late. the beach is known for it's beautiful views of the city and it's treacherous surf. this stretch of coastline is where a man and child were swept to sea and drowned. they were found floating under the golden gate bridge. late this afternoon, around 4:00, a third person, who was also taken out by the waves, was able to get out of the surf and call 911. >> rescue units shortly arrived within 25 minutes and recovered two bodies, one male adult and one child. >> reporter: the water, a chilly 53 degrees. there was a high surf advisory today. he says
>>> you're watching cbs 5 eyewitness news in high definition. >>> just steps from their door, water. the fear about a christmas day flood. good evening. i'm elizabeth cook. >> i'm allen martin. not the night anyone would want, let alone on christmas eve. tonight, a bay area neighborhood is nervously watching a fast-moving creek that's threatening to ruin their christmas. cbs 5 reporter elisa is in east palo alto where people spent the evening sandbagging their homes. >> reporter: i'm standing in front of some of those homes that had to be evacuated last night. but just yards away is that levy with crews hard at work, coming up with a temporary fix before tomorrow's rain. while most people spent christmas eve stacking presents under the tree, palo alto residents spent their night stacking sandbags, protecting their homes near a damaged levy, in preparation for more rain. sunday night, the creek spilled over the levy, flooding the neighborhood. >> we were swarmed with so much water last night that we had to run out. >> reporter: lucas brown was one of several evacuated. >> how is this
